If the top tenons were joined tight with wedges the joints that would work loose the easiest would be those on the lower stretcher. If one was fixed with a pin (in the front) and the other with a wedge, that would then be the "weakest link" and thus work loose the easiest. If that was knocked home from time to time the entire structure would stay fairly solid. I have such a system on my saw donkeys and it works.Johann von Katzenelnbogenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12774736348480165809noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4996432166551690323.post-52971486051071207232016-07-21T23:07:22.643+02:002016-07-21T23:07:22.643+02:00but why would the wedge be in only one side of the...but why would the wedge be in only one side of the construction? I remember when that table came up for auction, but i did not know where it had gone. I am glad it is on display (sort of) in a public place. I will point out again what i did in a paper when i first saw it, that one should compare this to the trestle tables one sees in illuminated manuscripts of the period and notice how much detail is actually missing in them. The painters of the manuscripts where not trying to show us what a table looked like, they were painted for people in the 15th century, who already knew what they looked like an were just given a 'shorthand' representational image.

I am also aware of the German table in the The Musée national du Moyen Âge (Cluny) but have only sen one picture of part of it, so i was happy to see all of your detail shots. (same for the first trestle table, as i only saw what was available on the auction's website before.)

Cheers!Johann von Katzenelnbogenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12774736348480165809noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4996432166551690323.post-14152123799408957902016-07-01T00:52:01.707+02:002016-07-01T00:52:01.707+02:00Uwielbiam tu zaglądać, zawsze coś co mile zaskoczy...Uwielbiam tu zaglądać, zawsze coś co mile zaskoczy i poprawi humor!
